Shift4 Dine vs Toast, including where Toast wins

We place Shift4 Dine. You should read this page knowing that, and you should judge it by whether we are willing to name the rooms where Toast is the better answer. We are.

Shift4 Dine and Toast, on the numbers

SystemSoftwareCard present rateContractWorth knowing
Shift4 DineWe install this$29.99per terminal, publishedInterchange plusmarkup shown in writing36 monthsWhat a rep will not lead with: there is a $250 annual program fee per device, an annual regulatory fee, and a yearly escalator on a 36 month agreement. We put all of it in the quote. What you get is a rate where the processor's margin is visible instead of blended into one number.
Toast$0 to $69per terminal, reported2.49% to 3.69%+ 15c, reported1 to 3 yearsThe rate climbs with add-ons. Online ordering and delivery move Starter Kit from 3.09% to 3.39%, and gift cards and loyalty take it to 3.69%. That higher rate then applies to every order, not just the online ones. Processing is mandatory and hardware is locked to Toast.

Square, Genius and Shift4 figures are published by those vendors and were read on their own pages on 8 August 2026. Toast and Clover figures are reported by Merchant Maverick, Expert Market, POSUSA, business.com and KORONA POS, cross checked against at least two independent sources each, because neither vendor publishes them. Software units differ: Square prices per location, Toast and Shift4 per terminal, Clover per device. Rates change without notice. General guidance, not legal, tax or accounting advice.

Where each one wins

01

Where Toast wins, plainly

If you are a large multi location group already standardised on Toast, the switching cost usually outweighs the rate difference. If your operation leans heavily on Toast's kitchen and delivery tooling, that is a real advantage and we are not going to pretend it is not.

02

Where Shift4 Dine wins

You can see the processor's margin. Interchange plus means the markup is a number in your quote rather than blended into one percentage. Over a year at meaningful volume that visibility is usually worth more than any feature on either list.

03

The rate escalation difference

On Toast's entry tier, adding online ordering or loyalty raises the processing rate on every transaction you take. That is not how Shift4 Dine is structured, and for a growing restaurant it compounds.

04

What we will tell you about our own

Shift4 carries a $250 annual program fee per device, an annual regulatory fee and a yearly escalator on a 36 month agreement. It is in our quotes. Ask a Toast rep for the equivalent list and see what you get.

Questions owners ask

Why should I trust a dealer's comparison?

You should not, on its own. Check the specifics: we name our own annual fees and our contract length above, and we name the situations where Toast wins. Then check whether the Toast page you read next does the same.

What is Shift4 Dine?

It is the restaurant POS formerly sold as SkyTab, renamed in May 2026. Online ordering, QR pay at the table, reservations and loyalty are included rather than arriving later as line items.
